It’s natural to feel anxious when going off to college for the first time. Many incoming first-year students have never lived away from home before, so it is only fair that the unknown parts of the experience cause some unease. The new territory, however, brings with it some excellent opportunities that make the initial anxiety of moving away to college worth it. Whether you’re headed to Arizona State or another part of the country, breathe easy and follow these tips to navigate the path of moving to college.

1. Packing and Moving the Essentials

Anyone who has moved away to college will tell you that space isn’t always vast. Moving into the dorms isn’t usually like stepping into a spacious living area all to yourself. The living spaces are cramped, so why would you want to bring with you all of your possessions? Think about functionality and purpose. Essential items will include items that are used regularly and will add value to the experience.

  • Essential Clothing
  • Grooming Items
  • Bedding
It may be unnecessary to bring all your things to your dormitory. Prioritize the essentials first.

2. Can You Ship Items Beforehand?

Sometimes it is more convenient to have a package waiting for you on your doorstep instead of hauling it across the country to your new dormitory. Check with the residence before you move to see if the landlord accepts packages.

3. Buy Things in Town

There’s no blaming you for wanting to have some food items in your room as a freshman. Does it make sense to pack them in your moving boxes and haul them to the dorm? One way to avoid this is to buy items in town once you arrive on campus. It will allow you to familiarize yourself with your new surroundings while making a move go smoother.

4. Set Boundaries

There is limited space within a dormitory, apartment, or other shared space as a freshman. Boundaries must be agreed with roommates rather quickly into the process. It will allow all parties involved to have clear expectations going forward. People go to college to seek education in and outside of the classroom. An uncomfortable living environment can affect the students’ motivation in school.

Talk to your roommates and dormmates about one another’s boundaries. Everyone needs personal space as you do.

5. Arrive Early on Move-In Day

There is a reason institutions will set up a specified move-in time. It’s to limit the chaos surrounding the dorms and limit the traffic. Be ready to move as soon as the scheduled time allows.

6. Find Balance

Academics are essential, but there is more to life than academics. Find balance within the living space by making it livable. Socialize, study, and enjoy the experience.

7. Budget and Stay Safe

Going away to college is a novel experience. Good safety habits and budgeting still need to be adhered to despite the new environment. Keep valuable possessions in a safe place away from the dormitory. It’s about practicability and functionality when moving away to college. Be open to these new challenges.
